Embry-Riddle students have a reputation for being smart, capable, and motivated, and they certainly deserve that reputation. At times though, students may experience life’s ups and downs and find themselves in need.
One need facing students nationwide is food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined by the USDA as “household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food.” After hearing from faculty, staff, and students, the newly formed Food Pantry Committee surveyed students in May 2017 on this subject. The results found that 54% of respondents stated that they or someone they knew did not have enough food for themselves or their household during the year.
The data from the survey led to a call to action by the Committee, and a Food Pantry and application process was established. With University support, faculty and staff have been donating non-perishable food to the pantry throughout the fall semester. A crowdfunding campaign raised funds for the Food Pantry to purchase supplies and additional non-perishable food.
If students do not have access to food, they may use the Embry-Riddle Food Pantry, which officially opens in January 2018. Visit https://ernie.erau.edu/Departments/dean-of-students-daytona/Pages/food-pantry.aspx for information or go to the Center for Diversity (Building 273, Suite 300) or the Dean of Students Office (Student Center, Suite 256) to request assistance. If students are in need, anyone can refer them to the Dean of Students Office, email@example.com, for food support. This process is confidential.
As the program grows, the Food Pantry Committee will continue to accept donations, assess the success of this outreach effort, and determine its future applications. In fact, there is an upcoming Ugly Sweater Contest at the Daytona Beach Brewery. Donated non-perishable food items will be collected, and those who donate will be entered in a contest to win prizes. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m., Saturday, December 2, 2017, at 482 Fentress Blvd., Unit N, Daytona Beach, FL 32114.
